Shelina’s Funeral

November 30, 2021

It may have looked somber online but the energy in the room was very peaceful, blissful and full of light. I felt all of the dance community who love her so much sitting and breathing with me.

There were about 80 people. Most of the women wore white. The coffin was a bluejay blue colour. Her body was covered in white cotton and only her face showed.

A recording of beautiful female voices was continually chanting. At the end when they closed the coffin and took her away, everyone in the room sang together praises to Allah.

Seeing Shelina's face not alive helped me to get past the denial.

We have all been so blessed to know, laugh and dance with Shelina.

She was a truly unique soul full of caring for others and charisma that lit up any room or stage.

In honour of Shelina, I hope to be more like her and infuse some of her huge heart into my every day life going foward.

In that way, she is never gone.
